Social Construction of Reality

This week in class we did alot of interesting things. I really enjoyed watching the show Freaks and Geeks alot, however, I was really into the topic of social construction of reality. This lesson was really interesting. I never knew that back in the old days there was no such thing as a “teenager”. It’s very weird to think that back then, 17 year olds were considered adults. At that age, they were already working in factories and having their own families. As a modern day teenager, I would not be able to support myself financially. I think that the spit for saliva activity did a good job of portraying social construction of reality. It’s odd that even though we all produce saliva, we are so trained to think that spit is disgusting, even though it’s the same exact thing. This really helps me understand how much of an impact society really has on me. Society itself created the term teenager. Everything that we do, is created for teenagers. For example, pop culture is mostly for teenagers. For us teenagers today, our lives are completely different from teenagers in previous years.

  1. I agree that it's crazy to think someone our age, back then, was on their own supporting themselves. It just shows how different society must've been.

  2. It is definitely weird to think that if we were teenagers 100 years ago, we'd probably be married with kids by now. It's interesting to see how far we've come since then, especially considering that we're the "boomerang" generation and the average age at which we become financially independent is near our 30's. Society has gone through a lot of changes since then and we're never entirely conscious of these changes since we don't take a step back and evaluate how our experiences now are very different than teenagers of the past.

  3. I think the fact that "teenagers" was constructed by society is really interesting! I definitely agree that I would not be able to support myself at this age nowadays.

  4. I was also surprised that "teenager" wasn't a word back in the day. It really shows how much society has changed and that social construction of reality is all around us.

  5. I also enjoyed the social constuction of reality spit experiement. It really showed how society truly shapes out minds to think certain things. Times have definitely changed; people are much more dependent these days. There are many factors that go into why we are so dependent on our parents at an older age. There is too much competition in the work force now, people need to work harder and learn to grow up faster in order to become independent.
